PWD needs RM350 mln to rectify killer roads
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24, 2007 (Bernama): Work to rectify dangerous and accident-prone spots in the country is being hampered by insufficient funds.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamad said the Public Works Department (PWD) was only allocated RM160 million when it would cost the department almost RM360 million to address the problem.
"As such, the PWD is giving priority to killer stretches which are in need of urgent repair," he said when replying to Jelaing Anak Mersat (BN-Saratok) in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Mohd Zin said 221 locations in Sarawak were identified as accident-prone locations and that the government had spent RM1 million to repair 71 of them.
Another RM7.7 million had been spent to repair 106 of 139 accident-prone areas in Sabah.
He said the cost included the installation of road signs.
