Four main threats to nation’s social contract

(Malaysiakini, 30/10/2007) Prominent lawyer Tommy Thomas spelled out the four main threats to the nation’s social contract - the Islamisation process, the Islamic state declaration, the encroachment of syariah courts onto the civil courts' jurisdiction and the fanning of racial sentiments by politicians.

"As the 50th anniversary of Merdeka loomed, the social contract came under serious attack from many fronts," said Thomas in his paper presented at the 14th Malaysian Law Conference this morning. (Full text)
