Ghani: IDR has our full support
NST (7/11/2007): The perception that Johor Umno is not fully supportive of the development initiatives under the Iskandar Development Region (IDR) is not true, said its liasion chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman.
Commenting on Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s speech which touched on the Malays’ participation in the IDR, he said Johor Umno had been supportive of the development plan from day one of its inception.
The Umno president in his speech said that any perception that Malays were incapable of taking part in the IDR was an insult to the race.
Johor Umno had recently been labelled by certain quarters including Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew as opposing the IDR project. Lee had told investors from the republic to be wary of investing in IDR due to what he described as hindrances posed by Johor Umno.
Ghani said the Malays in Johor had always viewed IDR as a development plan which would balance progress in the country and provide opportunities for them in terms of investment, businesses and jobs.
“And we (Johor Umno) are confident that Malays are capable of being part of the development plan because they have the necessary qualities such as professionalism and qualifications.
“The IDR would also enable us to provide a lynchpin for Malay entrepreneurs in Johor to move ahead as we have the cooperation of the relevant agencies to turn the project into something that is really beneficial for the Malays.”
