Non-Malays shouldn't worry if delegates touch on racial issues
Bernama (6/11/2007): The non-Malays need not fear if there were a handful of Umno delegates who touch on sensitive racial issues during the debates at the four-day Umno General Assembly this time, said Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad.
He said their action did not represent the whole Umno membership which now stands at 3.3 million.
“The non-Malays will understand that it involves only a small fraction who wants to have fun, the others will understand. We have been together for 50 years since the country’s independence,” he said here today.
Speaking to reporters after launching the `Umno Mobile Community’ (UMC) service by telecommunications company Celcom at the lobby of the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), he said the Malays and Umno truly respected and appreciated the cultures of the various races in the country.
“The non-Malays should not worry,” said Radzi, who is also the Home Affairs Minister.
On the proceedings at the Umno General Assembly so far, he said the assembly had proceeded well since the simultaneous opening of the general assemblies of the Umno Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings by Deputy Prime Minister and Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak last night.
“I’m very happy with the proceedings and the atmosphere at the general assembly. Everything went well so far,” he said.
Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is scheduled to open the Umno General Assembly tomorrow.
Earlier, Radzi also launched the ICASH “Swipe 2 Win” campaign running for one year beginning today until Nov 5, 2008 at the PWTC lobby.
The campaign organised by ICASH Global Rewards Sdn Bhd gave an opportunity to all Umno members and other ICASH card holders to win various prizes including iPoints worth RM500, holiday packages, a luxury home and a luxury car.
In order to participate in the campaign, members can make purchases from the ICASH online services including i-Holidays, i-Insurance and i-Shoppe.
