Understand hoisting and kissing of the keris - Hishammuddin
Bernama (6/11/2007): Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein hopes the people will understand his "kissing and hoisting of the Panca Warisan keris".
"Definitely vested-interest groups who don't understand or purposely chose not to understand what I said in my policy speech will continue to discuss the matter.
"I've a lot of other work to do," he told reporters after delivering his policy speech at the Umno Youth Assembly.
Hishammuddin said he discussed the kissing and hoisting of the keris, which symbolises the protection given to not only the Malays but also to other races in the country, with his Umno Youth colleagues.
The Dewan Merdeka at Putra World Trade Centre erupted into an uproar for a while when delegates cheered and applauded in support of Hishammuddin when the Umno Youth chief, in his policy speech, said vested-interest groups should not be carried away with their extreme chauvinistic feelings and that Umno Youth would not entertain such extreme polemics.
Describing the speech as "excellent and meaningful to the movement's members", Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin said Hishammuddin had held to the thrust of the movement's struggles and did not talk as an hypocrite.
"If we look at Umno Youth's history on video just now, the youth movement and our party almost collapsed for not adhering to the real principles and the core of our struggles," he said.
Khairy said Hishammuddin's speech also reminded that the power, wealth and popularity that came through political posts should not alter the principles and thrusts of the movement's struggles.
"The challenges espoused by him such as to woo as many youths as possible to the party and Umno Youth will be easier if we steadfastly stick to our basics," he said.
Umno Youth Exco Datuk Mukhriz Tun Mahathir described Hishammuddin's speech as the most constructive and the best he had ever heard.
"Datuk Seri (Hishammuddin) has stressed again the movement's original principles of struggle because in Umno its struggles are the core.
"I was attracted to the globalisation point raised by him. Umno Youth's struggles are not only at the local scene but also at international stage," said Mukhriz, expressing the hope that the movement would immediately execute the programmes and activities underlined by Hishammuddin.
